Ellen and his mother-
1920
Census of Johnson County, Spadra Township, Arkansas shows Lavander with
his wife Grace, and daughters Ruby, Lucille, Fay & Dorothy a
son Willie and Irene Williamson a sister-
Robert Lavander was called Vander by his family and friends. He moved his family to Crawford County, Mulberry, Arkansas in the late 1920's. There was seven (7) children born to Vander and Grace, Willie was his son by his wife Mrs. Emma "Gray" Williamson. Vander married his step daughter Grace after Emma died. Irene Williamson a sister to Grace, was living with Vander and Grace for years. Irene never married, but she had one child out of wed lock, his name was Jack Williamson. It is believed that Jack was fathered by Vander. The Sykes family lived in a large two story house at the south end of main street, the last house on the east side of the street before you reach the railroad tracks.
Vander worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company and provided for his family very well, but it could have been much better had it not been for his drinking. As Crawford County was voted a dry county in the 30's, Vander and his oldest son Willie "Bill", help keep the bootleggers of Mulberry in business. Vander kept a foot locker at the end of his bed where he kept his home made twist chewing tobacco and personal items. It was always a treat to watch him get into this foot locker just to see the items he kept there, such as his railroad Watch, shaving mug, straight razor, Etc., also the aroma from that twist chewing tobacco was very pleasant.
Information on The Certificate of Death furnished by his daughter Faye "Sykes" Steele, shows his name as Robert Vander Sykes born Aug. 25, 1865 in Johnson County, Clarksville, Arkansas.
Note: On Robert Vander Sykes Certificate fo Death, Mrs. Faye "Sykes" Steele daughter of Vander, listed Nancy's maiden name as Howard. She also, listed Nancy as Levander Sykes Jr.'s mother, but according to the 1860 Tennessee Census, his mother was Frances Sykes, Nancy was his step mother.
